MOST new Liverpool drivers predominantly learn to drive with a relative - and more learn with a friend than with a fully qualified driving instructor.
The figures come from a new survey conducted by reduction website vouchercloud, which polled 2,178 drivers who had passed their test in the last two years. Respondents were asked who they took the majority of driving lessons with: 46 percent of them said that a family member had taught them; a further 28% said that a friend was their main tutor; while only 26% stated that a qualified driving instructor was responsible for their own lessons. Roads & Maritime Services (RMS), the body responsible for overseeing driver training and testing, says that, normally, learners have around 45 hours of expert education and 22 hours of private practice prior to passing the practical driving test. Sydney South Driving School managing director said:"When you realise those who turn to their family and friends can save as much money, it's really a wonder that more people are not just using instructors to get a few lessons before taking their test. "That saving of over $600 could go towards the cost of a first vehicle, an insurance policy or even treating yourself and those who have helped you pass your test." "This may promote the idea that it is a good idea to cut the costs of learning to drive because so many other individuals are already doing it. "According to the latest Roads & Maritime Services (RMS) analysis, the statistics for people killed and seriously injured on the roads are up again, with newly qualified drivers being over-represented. However, that opinion drew criticism from the Driving Instructors Association, Australia's largest professional association for driver trainers. The chief executive, said that the comments were irresponsible. "One of the reasons could very well be poor driver training - people short-cutting on learning to drive by using unqualified, inexperienced and inexpert friends and family to'teach' them to save costs. "What they save not learning to drive properly, they cover in terms of repair and accident costs, vehicle maintenance, insurance costs or, regrettably, injury or loss of life."
